Shocking Things About Lobotomy: What are the Medical Reasons Why Frontal Lobotomies Happened?
67The entire story of pre frontal lobotomies is shocking.
The front of the brain coordinates and organizes oneself.
Lobotomies destroyed high cognitive functioning.
It truly is hard to understand how physicians, who are generally intelligent, highly educated, and dedicated to helping their patients, could participate in such a travesty, and how someone could win a Nobel Prize for developing a form of surgery that left over 40,000 mental cripples in the United States alone.
One famous such story is with Rosemary Kennedy.
She was mildly mentally disturbed and her father was bothered by her behavior.
He arranged for her to have a lobotomy, which made her permanently severely retarded and reduced her to living in an institution for the rest of her life.
Such stories are a tragedy.
Unfortunately, sometimes medical procedures go public before sufficient research has been done into it, leading to catastrophic results.
In the case of lobotomy, an experiment had been done on one chimp, and on that basis so many humans were subjected to this horror.
The whole procedure should have been researched much further before being allowed to go public.
There may have been many other reasons why positive effects were shown on the chimp's behavior, and the negative effects far outweigh the positive.
Perhaps some of the doctors were just trying to gain fame by doing these procedures.
In that time there was no FDA and there were no associations to prevent cruelty, so they tried out any ideas because things were so desperate and out of control.
They finally caught on to the problems with it much later.
If something like this would happen nowadays, it would hopefully be realized much sooner.
To a somewhat more mild degree, we unfortunately see similar stories nowadays- for example, with drugs- we constantly hear about different medicines which were being prescribed to many people and then they are taken off the market due to significant and disastrous side effects that the drugs have caused.
So many lives could have been saved or lived better if more research would be done prior to legalizing these drugs.
Let us learn from the past, so that history should not have to repeat itself.

Interesting, the history behind the lobotomy is just as horrid as the procedure itself is. Poor chimp.
Hi, I remember seeing a TV Film about this, a women had the procedure done, and according to the film she was so much better!! yeah right! it was an awful thing, and as you say so many doctors are using drugs for the same thing today, especially children with adhd!

No wonder the procedure is often used or talked about in horror movies as a means of torture, how awful! This is why I stay away from trial therapies and medications. Yikes!
